MATÉO MONTENEGRO

Had a sudden heat wave hit Miami this late at night? It was the only explanation for the sweat down my back and the tension all throughout my body.

Vivian’s blazing gaze told me otherwise.

“If that’s the case, why didn’t you search for me?” While her tone was pitched as a teasing challenge, it was a hit to my chest. The reminder of the feelings I locked away through years of therapy.

“I did. But as a kid, resources were limited. If it hadn’t been for our mothers finding a way to contact each other, I would have never known anything about you.”

When her family vanished, it was exactly that. There were no trace of them in Miami, not even in Panamá, where a few very distant relatives of theirs remained. Though Vivian’s parents had cut them off long ago, it was still a shot in the dark. And when I received the answer I was expecting, it confirmed what I already knew: the Calderónes were cut from the world on purpose after the accident.

Yet, so many unanswered questions remained, and the tinge of guilt that persisted grounded the sentiment that I didn’t deserve to know them.

“Papi didn’t want Mami revealing anything to mi tía Adriana. He was already extremely against them having contact.”

My jaw tightened as a question slipped. “Does your father at least know about you being down here?”

“Yes, but he doesn’t know where I’m staying—with who—and—”

The waiter rested our orders on the table. Vivian barely waited for his disappearance to grab her drink and down it.

“If you don’t want to say it, don’t force yourself. It’s okay.” Although I craved to bridge the thirteen years we spent apart, the months and days I spent thinking about her with no means of receiving answers, I understood her father’s sentiment.

If it hadn’t been for me opposing her parents' rules, she wouldn’t have been in the car on the day she was meant to be home. She wouldn’t have dealt with the repercussions of my own actions.

I wouldn’t want my one and only daughter, who almost lost her life, around me, either.

“He doesn’t know where I’m working, exactly. Since he hates Mount Group.” She explained the spiel her parents were under the impression of. Vivian’s father seemed to know less compared to her mother since she used Amá’s help.

Something caught my attention as she dived into her food.

“You know Nicolás?”

With a mouth full of food, she nodded, then swallowed. “He’s Bruno’s brother. Do you know him, too?”

“I’ve done business with him.” Mount Group has had a long-standing contract with Aguirre Hotels as both companies overlapped across Latin America. They were one of the first customers our company ever had, making Papá well-disposed to any of their propositions. I, on the other hand, didn’t share that leniency. Since I dictated what gets approved in South Florida, I gave Nicolás a harder time. The fucker’s not only slimy, but had a very close relationship with local mafias.

No one dared to oppose him except me.
